Saddles and Success: Isabel Bonilla Uribe's Story

December 12, 2024 Kassi Strong

Maria Isabel Bonilla Uribe, the spirited Colombian entrepreneur behind Blue Mare Equestrian Services in Billings, Montana, embodies the resilience and creativity that define successful businesswomen. Isabel specializes in horse training, animal care, and a suite of related services, and her story inspires women across Montana to pursue their passions and build businesses that align with their values. Her Colombian heritage plays a vital role both in her work as an equestrian and as a businesswoman.

A Multifaceted Business Built on Passion

Blue Mare Equestrian Services isn’t just about horses—it’s a comprehensive approach to equine care and education. Isabel offers colt starting, horseback riding lessons, tack cleaning, equine marketing, and even pet and ranch sitting. Her clients range from recreational horse enthusiasts to owners looking for a safe and enjoyable relationship with their animals.

"I noticed a lack of affordable and convenient training options in Billings for people who weren't interested in showing. People who just wanted a safe, well-mannered horse whose company they can enjoy on a recreational level, whether they ride or not."  Isabel explained. Her focus on proper horsemanship, trust and safety is the cornerstone of her business.

Her approach is deeply personal. From working with young horses, often starting from scratch, to helping owners connect with their animals, Isabel sees her work as a blend of education, empathy, and artistry.

Lessons Learned: The Skills That Shaped Her

Becoming an entrepreneur taught Isabel valuable lessons—many of which were first developed through her work with horses. "You have to be extremely stubborn," she says with a laugh. This determination, coupled with resilience, empathy, and resourcefulness, forms the foundation of her business mindset.

Isabel also credits her willingness to learn and adapt for her success. Staying open to new ideas and techniques has been vital for both her business and her personal growth.

Financial savviness, while challenging, is another area that Isabel has prioritized. Before launching her business, she spent years preparing financially, ensuring she could take calculated risks. "I thought long and hard and made sure I was in a good financial place," she recalls.

Overcoming Challenges and Upholding Values

As any business owner knows, the journey isn’t without its hurdles. For Isabel, one of the most difficult challenges has been staying true to her values while navigating client relationships. She recalls a particular experience with a client whose approach to horsemanship clashed with her own.

"It reached a point where I was dreading going to work there," Isabel said. Ultimately, she decided to part ways with the client, even though it was a tough decision. "I have three rules: I don’t tolerate drama, disrespect, or working for free. If those factors come into play, I have no choice but to let the client go."

Another ongoing challenge has been managing the financial aspects of her business, including taxes and budgeting. Isabel has leaned on her network for support, seeking advice from other business owners and experts such as The Rocky Mountain WBC.

The Power of Community

One of Isabel’s favorite aspects of running her business in Montana is the sense of community. Having moved from a large city in Colombia to the smaller, close-knit town of Billings, her professionalism and integrity is consistently paying off as she becomes a reliable, trustworthy figure in the local horse industry.

Social media has also played a pivotal role in her success. Through referrals and recommendations, her business has grown organically, often with minimal marketing efforts. "I get tagged five or six times a day in posts because people are happy with my services," she shares.

Isabel is equally passionate about supporting other women in business. She frequently collaborates with fellow female entrepreneurs, creating a network of mutual support that benefits everyone involved.

Stories of Success and Transformation

For Isabel, the most rewarding part of her work is seeing the transformation in the horses and their owners. She recalls two standout cases:

The first was a young horse rescued from a loose horse sale in poor condition. Over two years of dedicated care and training, the horse underwent a remarkable transformation, becoming a beautiful and healthy animal.

The second was a filly that had been mishandled and was entirely untrained. Working closely with the owner, Isabel helped the filly develop into a well-mannered, confident horse.
